The Benefits of Blueberries

It has long been known that blueberries are good for you. Now new research indicates they are cancer fighters as well.

A recent study in Cancer Research found that blueberry extract slows the spread of a hard-to-treat form of breast cancers known as triple-negative breast cancers. Triple-negative breast cancers, accounting for 10% to 15% of all cases of breast cancer, are hard to beat since they lack the receptor cells that most cancer treatments target.

During the preliminary test-tube experiment researchers found that, compared to other fruit and vegetable extracts, blueberries had the greatest effect on the tumors without damaging the healthy cells. Sixteen mice were randomized and given either a placebo or blueberry extract consisting of a daily dose of pure juice extracted from blueberries equivalent to about five ounces of blueberries per day for a 150 pound person.

After one week of the diet treatments the mice were injected with the triple-negative breast cancer cells. Six weeks later the researchers found that the tumors of the mice given the blueberry extract were 70% smaller and were less likely to spread to other parts of the body than the mice given the placebo.
